[This is a fic by me. I don't own Yoshihiro Togashi's character, Kurama. I own everything else.]
A girl with jet black hair and strange, contrasting bright green eyes ran up to a plain-looking girl excitedly. The plain-looking girl was chunky and she also looked drained of energy, as though she couldn't possibly give a rat's ass to whatever her friend wanted to tell her.
"Nina! OH. EM. GEE. Guess WHAT?" the girl with black hair practically shouted.
Nina rolled her eyes and said exasperatedly, "What?"
"I brushed past Suuichi today, and, and--"
"He gave you an STD? He noticed you? He asked you to marry him?" Nina humored.
"Psh, I wish. Suuichi brushed past me today and a flake of dandruff from his hair landed on me! I'll save it forever." She held out a small plastic box inside of which lay a small black velvet pillow the size of a cracker. Nina looked closer to see that a small flake of dandruff rested on top of it.
"Brella... I hate to break it to you, but Suuichi would never date you. He's a mama's boy and that'll never change. I'm... sorry, Bre."
Brella merely flipped her black bangs back and stuffed the plastic box back into her purse, which looked like a spray-painted shopping bag.
"Whatever. It's almost second period, so... I'll see you around, 'kay?" She walked off. The walls shuddered and stuff sprinkled from the asbestos-covered ceiling. Nina shrugged and walked in the opposite direction to her next class.
'Stupid school construction... Why'd they have to do it in the winter? That makes no sense. Ugh, it's gonna be so cold... The walls are shaking! Ew...? Oh, I can't believe it... Suuichi could love me. Right...?' Brella thought fifteen minutes into her teacher's boring lecture on chromosones.
Just as she thought this the walls shuddered violently and a light near the front of the room crashed to the floor, narrowly avoiding Mr. Klapowitz.
"Oh, god!" he shouted, recoiling. "Guys, let's get out of here!" He led the students out of the door. By the sound of it, lamps all over the school were crashing.
Brella was still spacing out about Suuichi. She didn't notice everyone else was leaving until the fat kid in class wiggled his way through the doorway. She got up and tripped on the large purse hanging on her shoulder. The plastic container holding Suuichi's dandruff flake fell out and slid to the wall on the other side of the room, right under where another lamp dangled, threatening to fall at any moment from the harsh vibrating of the walls.
Daringly, Brella ran up to the front of the room and swept the box into her purse in one gliding and elegant motion. She narrowly avoided getting hit by the lamp because she ran toward the door in just time.
When she reached the hallway she looked both ways for any stragglers from her class. She didn't see ANYONE. Delirious and lightheaded from breathing in so much asbestos, she staggered through the hallway toward where she thought the nearest exit was. She made her way into the high school auditorium and fell right when she entered, thinking she had finally made it outside into safety. Everything went black.
Brella awoke to a blurry figure leaning over her. The person's cold fingers where touching her neck. She reached toward her neck protectively and gasped in the process, hoisting herself up.
"Wh-who are you?" she asked, her vision still blurry enough not to allow her to make out any details of the figure.
A female's familiar voice seemed to mumble something a few feet away. After a slight pause, in a calm voice the figure stated himself as Suuichi. Brella gasped again, dropped her head to the hard floor and was knocked out again.
"Man, I can't believe this. We're stuck. We might DIE here, Suuichi," Nina spoke softly into the darkness. The last lamp had crashed to the floor, leaving the two in a pitch black setting.
"I wouldn't be too sure that we'll die here, Nina. The supports here are stronger than the rest of the school, excluding the gymnasium, of course. We'll just be stranded here for a while, considering the last place people will search for stragglers is in the auditorium; no assemblies have been scheduled for today," Suuichi explained.
"That's true, but I'm parched. If only I had brought my water bottle today..."
"I left my water bottle in my calculus class," Suuichi recalled empathetically.
"I guess we'll just have to wait."
Just then a door opened and light streamed into the room. The light framed the silhouette of a girl who instantly collapsed to the ground.
"Oh, my god! We need to go help that girl!" Nina cried. She and Suuichi rushed over to the girl.
"The light from behind the door's gone... I can't make out who she is. Wait--is that... Brella?" Suuichi asked.
"I think so. Oh, my god..."
"What?"
"Nothing. Just, I don't know," Nina said hesitantly. Suuichi reached toward Brella tentatively.
"Wake up, Bre!" Nina demanded hastily. She shook Brella's shoulders until it looked like Brella's eyes flickered open.
"KENNY! Mom said to stop coming into my room!"
Suuichi stifled a snicker. Nina pulled Brella into a sitting position.
"It's NINA, you dolt!"
"Oh... OK." Pause. "Five more minutes, 'kay? Then we... can go get Snuffles fixed..."
"For Pete's sake... Brelliana Parker! Your school is crumbling and you staggered into the auditorium in a daze and you've been knocked out twice now. You're with your best friend Nina Green and c--CLASSMATE, Suuichi Minamino. Get with the program!"
"Huh? Oh, yeah. OK." Brella looked over at Suuichi and gasped.
"SUUICHI!"
"Yes?"
Brella turned to Nina and excitedly mouthed, "OH MY GOD, IT'S HIM!"
"I can't read your lips," Nina said.
"IT'S HIM!" Brella shouted excitedly before realizing he was sitting right next to her. "I could die!"
"What? I'm confused..."
"It's OK, people get that a lot whenever she talks."
"I see. Well, we should get away from the door. Who knows how dangerous it would be if the door spontaneously swung open and hit us." Everyone moved a few feet away.
"Brella, I'm sorry, but you have a huge chunk of hair in your face," Suuichi pointed out.
He couldn't see it, but Brella blushed and nervously brush the piece of hair away.
"You're not getting it. Here." He moved the hair out of the way. "There, that's better." Brella fell over and blacked out again.
Suuichi sighed. "Does she do this frequently?"
"Uhm, I don't know, actually," came Nina's reply. "She's just doing this, well... because she..."
Suuichi quietly allowed her to finish.
"She kind of likes you, I guess. A little bit."
"Oh?"
"Yeah," Nina said breathlessly. "Did you suspect it?"
"No, I did not."
Silence.
"Do you like her back?"
Just then the door opened and three construction worker figures appeared. They saw the group.
"Ah, Bert, I toldja we shoulda looked in here! See that? Got some kids in here after all."
"Well, guys, come on with us. We gotta get you to safety."
"Hallelujah!" Nina shouted happily, completely forgetting her question. She slapped Bre awake.
"We're out of here!"
"Yaaaay," Brella said weakly. She got to her feet with the support of a construction worker and followed everyone outside.
The whole school was standing outside in the freezing weather. The principal was telling everyone that people with cell phones should call for rides and those without cellular devices should either use their friends', walk home, or wait for the bus.
Nina and Brella lived only a block away from the school so they started off in the direction of their houses. They were chatting and Nina was even considering telling her friend about the conversation between her and Suuichi while Brella was knocked out. Out of nowhere someone ran up to the two. They looked back to see that it was Suuichi.
"Oh, hi, Suuichi," Nina said while Brella's face turned bright red and she turned away.
"Hello. I, er, live down this... side of town. Uhm, may I speak to Brella privately for a second, please?"
"Sure." Nina stood still while Suuichi gestured for Brella to come to him. They walked a few feet away.
"I'd like you to know that I think that you are very beautiful. And, if you weren't doing anything this afternoon, would you like to go somewhere and... hang out?"
Brella almost died. With as much self-control as she could muster she nodded robotically, happily swelling with pride inside. "Uh--yeah, I'm not doing anything. What did you have in mind?"
"Well, I was thinking that we could go to the mall."
"That sounds great!"
"Great."
So Suuichi and Brella walked over to Nina and the walked home and stuff and exchanged phone numbers, email addresses, and Runescape usernames. And they became a BFF for forever trio 4lyf.
